WHAT IS SICE?
The full meaning of the abbreviation SICE is Students In Church Evangelism. It is an annual spiritual activity instituted in most tertiary institutions in Ghana where students go to remote places to share the gospel. This program is such an important one to almost all denominations on the various campuses which also calls for serious preparations for successful execution. SICE normally happens at the end of a semester's work which is during vacation and it is an avenue for young men and women full of energy and the Holy Spirit to preach Christ to people within a particular duration.
Role of the body of Christ everywhere
Matthew 28:19 ["Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,] which states the final words of our Lord Jesus Christ before his ascension into heaven. The church (EKKLESIA) refers to all believers in Jesus Christ who are all over the world. Bible scholars mention this term called the body of Christ which in fact has been mentioned in the Bible. Jesus Christ is the savior of the world and we all who have believed and confessed him as Lord and savior have been baptized into him making us all one.
The church can be referred to as the congregations of Christians at different locations in the world. Romans 5:8 [but God shows his love for use in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.] discusses the fact that Jesus came to die for our sins even when we were still in our sins. An emphasis that we did not pay or do anything to be saved but it is the gift of God hence the responsibility of the body of Christ or the church to preach the gospel about Jesus Christ. It is largely known as the Great Commission because it is at the heart of God.
2 Peter 3:9 [The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.] When the gospel is proclaimed, there is a conviction by the Spirit of God which leads to repentance and forgiveness leading a person to Christ.
John 3:16 ["For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.]. This responsibility is what encourages outreaches in varying kinds to let people know about Christ. From visiting patients in hospitals to prisons, to orphanages to rural and urban communities. The church lives with the mandate of preaching the gospel so that the light of Christ will be revealed in everyone's life.
Why SICE and its essence
All over the country has been the greatest issue of corruption and infidelity or unloyalty among both public and private workers which is an issue calling for stringent measures. The only thing able to cause a man to fear God is the presence of Jesus Christ in that life. Students who have the opportunity to go for SICE get to preach God's word and also experience the move of God's power. All these are ways of preparing the youth to be morally upright and God-fearing individuals who will help build the country in the future. Partaking in evangelistic acts like this helps the youth to learn how to evangelize to different people thereby sharing and showing forth the love of God.
Duration of activities
The events normally occur after a semester's work and most times the duration can be a week or weeks. It happens right after vacation making it easy to mobilize people for work. A week of evangelism activities like placard exposition, one-on-one evangelism, crusade, movie show and a whole lot is not short at all but the impact is tremendous and positive. The Bible describes a shepherd who had 100 sheep and lost one who left the 99 to look for the lost one and after finding it, he comes back with joy in his heart. God is happy when sinners are saved through the love believers show them because God has demonstrated his love towards us first in all things allowing his only Son to die for our sins.
Importance of SICE in the life of the participants
Every time that students have the opportunity to go and share the gospel, they come back with many experiences and some include the healings witnessed, the movement of the power of God and even the realization and display of some gifts of the Spirit. One man of God said that the gifts of the Spirit are enabled on the field of evangelism hence it is without doubt that this annual act is not just a mere one. Some of the students who are able to partake experience life-transforming encounters that go a long way in making them vessels useful in the hands of God.
However, it is a highly spiritual activity that opens one's eyes to the realities that exist beyond what is merely seen.
Ephesians 6:12 [For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.]
Souls won in the cause of the activity are put under the care of a Bible-believing church in the area for grooming into maturity so that they can also grow to become useful vessels for God. SICE teaches individuals a lot of amazing experiences of fun and fellowship with fellow Christians and binds everyone together in love.
