Attributes of God in Twi and their meanings

In the Akan language or Twi, God, the Creator has many titles or attributes which tell and proclaim of His majesty, sovereignty, holiness and more. As Twi happens to be the most spoken local language in the country, it is just wonderful to learn how the various titles used to refer to God and what the meanings are.

Attributes of God in Twi


Daa Nyankopɔn - Eternal God. God is a god of eternity, so the attribute states how the LORD remains forever unchanged.

Mmɔbrɔhunu Nyame - Merciful God. Bible says that, 'it is by the mercies of the LORD that we are not consumed'. The merciful nature of God is one thing believers pray for daily because in the human strength, nothing can be done except the giver of strength has mercy on His people.

ɔbɔɔde3 - Creator. Refers to God as the Creator of all things there are in the world.

Ototrobonsu - Giver of rain.

Obaatanpa - Good God who cares and guards.

Gye Nyame - Except for God. This also deals with the supremacy of God.

Nyame - It is a title used to refer to God. 

Tumiwura - The God who has all power. So it refers to God as the All-powerful God.

Okyerema - The wise one.

Agya - Father. God alone is Father to all and this attributes describes him so.

Nyansa Nyinaa - All Wise. The God who knows it all. "An appellation goes like, the God who sees a black ant on a black stone in the night." 

Nimde3 nyinaa - All knowing

Kronkron - Holy. In 1 Peter 1: 16 (since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy")

Tema - Compassionate

Teneneeni - Just

ɔdɔ - Loving

Bɔnefaky3ni - Forgiving

ɔma - Provider

Banbɔfoɔ - Protector

Ay3myie - Patient
