CALCULATING PERCENTAGES BETWEEN TWO NUMBERS AND QUANTITIES

Percentage of the black fruits out of the total is 33.333333333%

Percentages are used in a lot of daily activities and so students from young age are thought to have knowledge of it. Everyday activities involve some kind of calculation in one way or the other and likewise do fractions and percentages.

Before we move to understanding how to find percentages, an understanding of fractions is an important knowledge that will be made use of.

FRACTION: Fraction is normally regarded as part of a whole. For instance, an orange is a whole. WHOLE in the sense that it is its original state or form and no part of it has been taken away but when a part is taken off, then the part becomes a fraction of the whole.

NB// Everything whole has a fraction of 1/1 which is 1 or 100%.

Let’s go further with an illustration of a paper.

1 sheet of paper: Divided into 4 parts

                               =

Taking one part out of the four pieces of paper, the expression will be

The whole = 4 Thus, 4 pieces of paper

Part taken away as a fraction of the whole becomes ¼

The above fraction is read as one-fourth or 1 over 4 or 1 out of 4.

Note: ¼  The 1 is called numerator and the 4 is called the denominator.

TRIAL

John has 10 pens and he gave 2 pens to his sister. What fraction of pens has he given out to the sister?

       Solution

Total number of pens=10

Pens given to sister=2

Fraction of pens given to sister=2/10  The fraction 2/10 must be reduced to a simpler form so it will become; 2/10=1/5

Therefore he has given 1/5 of the pens to his sister.

The percentage refers to the part of a whole and the whole is expressed as 100. Knowledge of fractions is very useful in understanding percentages.

Let’s use the previous example to talk about percentages.

John has 10 pens and he gave 2 pens to his sister. Find the percentage of pens given to the sister.

Total number of pens=10

Pens given out =2

Total percentage of pens =100%

To continue express the number of pens given out as a fraction of the total pens.

Thus, 2/10 which is reduced as 1/5

Now we multiply 1/5 by 100%

1/5 *100/1

1 and 100 are numerators so we multiply them and then 5 and 1 are the denominators.

We now have 100/5=20%

Therefore, the percentage of pens he gave to his sister is 20%.

This particular topic “PERCENTAGES” is not really difficult if careful attention is paid to it.

I hope you will be able to get an understanding of percentages with even these few explanations and examples.
