POWER OF SOCIAL ONENESS

red ants in a social activity
Red ants surround a breadcrumb as they gather it for storage

Humans, as we are, must be attentive and observant since a lot of things going on around us and some even go unnoticed. I was eating and a cat came around so I gave it a bite of bread but it left it and went away. Within some minutes, from nowhere red ants started coming one by one. What got me thinking was how they knew about the presence of the bread on the floor.

Is it that the ants are fortunate? Comparing the height of ants to that of the bread is a huge difference, but they manage to climb it. Gradually, the size of the breadcrumb started to reduce as the presence of the ants increased because they were coming in troops with no end. Social insects are so amazing that little by little they were taking the bread into their dwelling. A proverb tells us to be wise as an ant that stores its food in times of abundance and when the rainy season comes they have in abundance. It was really a moment that this was witnessed.

I mean how were they all able to come out in their numbers? Insects communicate and live as one in which they are social insects. Sometimes we as human beings want to be left alone doing our own thing. We can indeed solve our challenges with unity and all togetherness.

Found some hard-to-notice features of the movement of these ants.
  • They move together in two directions. A part moves towards the food for collection whilst the other part sends the collected pieces to their dwelling and it continues like that until everything is picked.

  • They communicate with one another as they meet. What could this thing mean?

  • Determination in what they do is an inevitable feature of their lifestyle.

  • On an important note, their place of abode is not easily discovered or accessed by intruders.
