In the Ghanaian community and bringing it down to the Ewes, names are specifically given for different reasons. The main reason why names among this tribe are never taken for granted is that the names normally have a direct impact on the bearers. Names are given for a reason since they reflect or have an influence on the people to whom they are given. All names have meanings they represent and Ghanaian names and specifically Ewe names are not an exception.  You will be enlightened on some of these Ewe names and their various meanings. In fact, this article gives you an idea of what some Ewe names mean. Names are like organic components of the people per the people's beliefs.    We believe that individuals become the name they are given and for this reason, names are chosen carefully before being given to individuals. Some of the names are just given to show the day of the week a person is born whereas some show the circumstances around a person's birth. Below are some nam...

What should education profit the individual?

The growth of an individual after birth is very important but there is an essential development that must accompany the physical growth which is the mental growth. The mind is part of the human person known as the soul and the mind happens to be the central location of actions consciously and  even unconsciously. This means that who an individual will grow and become depends on the kind of mindset the person nurtures as part of his or her training as he or she moves from one stage of life to the other.
Education as it is normally described is the process of acquiring knowledge and skills. Education is in forms which include:
  • Formal education
  • Informal education
  • Semi-formal education

All these forms or types of education provide a scope of knowledge in a specified field that informs and guides the learner to practice in a particular field either as a work, profession or a job.
Formal education happens to be the type of education that I would say leads all the other categories if my thoughts serve me right. Every single country in the world I believe trains her citizens formally for different purposes. However, we can say that some people who tend to have some knowledge about education no matter the type or kind might have misconstrued the main rationale for education. This is what this post is all about, getting the rationale for education right.

Why is education needed?

Earlier in the preceding paragraphs, you have read about some kinds of education and I think this is a good platform to go back and touch on them a little further before we delve into the general significance of education in every single nation or country of the world.

Formal education
As familiar as it is, this takes place in established institutions with laid down or well organized curricula to impact knowledge. The knowledge is both theoretical and practical for a wholistic training of the minds. We can talk of basic schools, second cycle institutions, tertiary and a lot more. Formal education provides literacy skills every individual in this age needs.

Informal education
This type of education does not take place in an organized setting where there is a well prepared structure for impacting knowledge. For instance, learning how to fix broken down cars from a sole proprietorship owner who fixes cars can be classified under this type of education. This kind is wholly towards the practical impartation of knowledge but even though there isn't a prepared structure for how knowledge is impacted, there is normally a duration of years a learner should spend acquiring the skill or knowledge.

Semi-formal education
Stays in between the two types hence has a blend or what is seen or done in both formal and informal education.

Now globally, innovation and rapid development is fast evolving especially in countries where the larger population is highly educated. Elsewhere in some developing countries, unemployment is one of the causes of restlessness and brain-drain to search for greener pastures. Education provides learners with wholistic foundations to become responsible and revolutionary in building a nation and the world.

Myths about education ***

Let's stick to some three things some say about education which I think is not entirely the case and must be reviewed.

1. Good grades means a great future
When we were growing up as children in school, one of the things that occur is that students who normally get good grades are labelled brilliant and the others looked down upon some times. Good grades should mean that the individual knows exactly what he is being taught not for examination sake only but as part of the learner. The soul, they say comprises of the mind, will and emotions. This means that the student getting good grades should actually have the things he says he knows fresh inside of his mind as part of him now.

This is not always the case and it even worsens when some instructors or even parents are only concerned about the numbers on the report sheet. Good grades are good but this is much appreciated when it is the true representation of what the learner knows. Understand this fact should cause those who try to cheat during examination know that it is for their own good and not anyone else.

I remember a true story I was told about a man who was very brilliant in school but after some years, he couldn't make anything proper thing out of it. He survived by working as a laborer for others to earn. Wisdom on the side of the educated will inform him about the choices to make to succeed and not just the excellent grades in the paper.

2. Qualifications or certifications show one's worth
A misconception that has killed dreams and visions is the belief that plenty of degrees, certifications, qualifications determine the financial state or kind of life a person lives. This at times propels some to chase qualifications all through but eventually the expectation might not even be met. Education stands to help the individual discover his potentials that must be unleashed for exploits. Self-discovery is key to ascertain how exactly this must be handled as some would need to dive deep into certain fields to  become the experts and professionals they desire to be. Others too must know that there is more to certifications and so follow what their potentials must achieve rather than try to secure jobs with qualifications which in certain instances shutter some aspirations.

3. You must get a job after school
No one will be able to feed without a source of income for earn a living but then the certificates are not absolute guarantees of jobs. The most successful people in the world when we study them closely, we discover exceptionality in their conducts, attitudes etc. For instance, great scientist like Isaac Newton who made a number of discoveries that are still relevant today. Consider presidents who strived to free their countries from colonial rule when there were obstacles, Thomas Edison experimenting many times to create the light bulb, these are only a few. If students do not cultivate the right mindset whilst undergoing education, this is what becomes the end result, after completion, the next thing is job search and maybe that ends it.
Meanwhile, others in some countries work tirelessly everyday to contribute to the development of the world, researching to solve societal problems and this is what the mindset must be because if you help the world through the knowledge you have acquired you definitely will have a means of living. This is undeniable because your value will draw resources to acquire it.

Finally, education as popularly said; "Is the key to success". It only becomes a true statement in the life of the one who is determined to unravel the good in his education by being curious and ready to experiment ideas, take reasonable risks and have great sense of responsibility towards the environment and society. Some of the great ideas brought up as well as discoveries benefitting the world today were possible because education provided the basis and foundation to bring out those things.
