The Communication Design course offered in the Faculty of Art at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST) has become one of the most competitive courses in the faculty. Therefore it is just important that anyone who is trying to apply for admission for this hot-cake would have to be aware of the laid down requirements to secure admission. 

This post lets you know about the requirements of the course and the cut-off point for the 2024/2025 academic year to know whether or not a person is eligible to apply or not.
Generally, students who studied Visual Arts in senior high school are the people very eligible for this programme as it is based on the foundations set in the study of this subject. That said, it is not automatic but certain criteria would have to be met to secure admission. 

Entry requirements for BA Communication Design(Graphic Design)

a. WASSCE/SSSCE Applicants
The applicant must have credit passes in the core subjects(English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science).

The applicant must also have credit passes in these elective subjects: Graphic Design, General Knowledge in Art(G.K.A), Information and Communication Technology(ICT) and any other elective subject offered under the Visual Art course excluding Leatherwork, Basketry and Bead Making.

For someone who might be wondering what other Visual Art elective subjects can make a person eligible to apply and possibly secure admission, some of these subjects include Picture Making, Sculpture, Ceramics etc.  The reason is simple, the course is a build-up on the foundations of the course which have already been laid in the SHS. 

b. 'A' Level Applicants
 'O' level or equivalent, the applicant must have credit passes in five(5) subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
'A' Level or equivalent, the applicant must have credit passes in two(2) subjects including Art.


c. Mature Applicants
The mature applicant would have to be at least 25 years of age with at least 3 years of working experience. He or she must meet the requirements for the WASSCE/SSSCE or A level.
After this, the person would have to pass a qualifying examination to be shortlisted for an interview. Upon passing the interview, the applicant would do a practical examination.

What is the cut-off Point?

The cut-off point for BA Communication Design for the 2024/2025 academic year in KNUST    is grade 13. 
The grade is calculated by adding the grades of the three core subjects plus three elective subjects.

What Jobs Are There For A Communication Design Graduate in Ghana?
Communication Design which is also known as Graphic Design is a course that guarantees working opportunities if not employment in any company or industry, the graduate can monetize his skills and start his or her own business and make a good living out of it.

However, some of the common professions for graduates of this course include:
Branding: This involves the creation of Corporate Visual Identities(CVIs) for companies. The designer spearheads the brand management of organizations to position them well in the minds of consumers so they are able to sell their products or services to their target audience.
Photography: With a trained eye for detail and exceptional images, the graduate captures scenes and more either for projects for clients as per the demand. One can also work as a freelance photographer who even sells his photos online to clients who need such deliveries.
Graphic Designing: This includes but is not limited to the design of book covers, billboards, flyers, posters and more to promote events, market products and services. The services of Graphic Design currently is in high demand due to how visual communication is driving sell of goods and services.
Copywriting: Copywriting deals with the careful and creative planning of headlines and catchy tag lines for brands and content that can drive conversions.
Web Designing: The design of web pages for companies to establish their presence digitally to make their operations become more easier.
Video production: It involves the planning and creation of video content whether movies, tv broadcast and what have you. The areas in this section are broad which means a myriad of careers to explore.
Multimedia production: An area like this delves into every multimedia whether tv, radio, social media that can be harnessed to send information to the general public.
Book illustration: Book illustrators create drawings which are known as illustrations to add more explanation to stories and other messages. Those skilled in illustration create characters for animations, mascot and more.
Motion designing
Animation: Using the illustration skills and keen observational skills, the animators are able to create movement in illustration and play them in sequence for commercial purposes or entertainment. This is one of the areas that also pays very high.
Packaging designing: Packaging design deals with the evaluation of manufactured products to determine what sort of materials they can be packaged in before distribution to customers.

    1. You can still apply and get admission based on some factors.
      For example, if the number of people who applied are not up to the number the school wants to admit. Also there are sometimes the option to be admitted as a fee paying student if the regular slot in full.

  3. Does that mean that someone who studied General Arts in SHS and got grade 8/10 cannot apply to read Communication Design?
