Background surrounding the names

  • Agbeli
Cassava is a food crop that is a tuber and given this name to someone is someway. It is a surname which is not very common though but the actual situation that might have led to the great grandfathers of this family choosing this name, is not known but there is definitely a reason of which the bearers will be in the best position to tell. There is also another surname which is AKPA - the name of a food sold in some parts of Ghana.
  • Gbelornu
Translating this name means dust bin and the reason why such a name can be given is due to the situation where parents give birth but the children are lost and with the one that survives such a name can be given. In the olden names, giving of such names were common and the notion is to portray the children unattractive to whatever might want to take them away young.
Adukpo
A name which mean refuse dump has a relation with "Gbelornu", in that it is also given to a child in case the ones given birth to were lost. In fact, it sounds funny but taking it on a more serious note, the idea is not to portray anyone funny but rather circumstances determine it.
  • Afianu
This is also normally a surname but it is very rare to find or hear though. In some communities in Ghana especially the coastal ones, fried fish is sold very much and is is mostly displayed on a wooden tray called the AFIANU. For this particularly name, the reason for it is also not known.
  • Abadzivor
This is another interesting name which is a surname and even though it sounds very funny, there is definitely a reason for it. It means bed sheet.
  • Gavor
A name which means [The money has finished]. From the consultation had with an elderly person who bears this name as a surname, it has this background. So, anyone who has money is likely to spend on ladies or just because the money is plenty. Choosing this name has the idea that once the money being spent on them gets finished, the ladies following the man will chuckle and apparently leave. Sounds very interesting to know how such names come about and become family names.
  • Gaxadza
This is also given as a surname and it means a cage but actually it refers to the metal gauze normally used for cages for birds. Once had a mate with this name and it was fun mentioning it and the response from the other end.

Quite a number of these names can be found some noticeable and some not but all the same, they all have various reasons for their adoption and it is the most important thing that matters.
