Gari is a very popular food made from cassava. It is one kind of food that is widely known in the sense that even in countries like Nigeria, Togo and all over Ghana in addition to other nations it can be found. From the fresh cassava, gari is made and because it lasts longer, it travels long distances without getting wasted. In parts of the country where their main occupation is farming, gari is produced from there in large quantities and sent to the cities for sales. Here in Ghana, a variety of foods are prepared from gari. How is it prepared or made(garshit)
- Pour gari in a bowl.
- Make a salt solution and add some to the gari.
- This is to soften it a little and also add that taste of salt.
- Stir to get even distribution of the salt solution.
- Add the shito and stir very well.
Shito which is very well rich in a lot of ingredients like fish powder, meat or whatsoever has that nice scent and makes the meal all so delicious.
Why is gari and shito so popular?
Very simple, when on a journey or most especially in school, one thing most people rely on in times when things are not as expected is this food. With only these two main things: gari and shito, a person can eat. Why not include it in the luggage?
Well, it is one reason why it has gained so much popularity especially in second cycle institution or boarding schools that even generated the name; garshit. This name tries to make it nice as some rich folks mock colleagues who regularly eat it.
