Check out these articles that share great thoughts on Ewe names.

We're looking at a very special name that is commonly given among the Ewes and before any detailed exploration of what the name 'DELALI' means, it will be very crucial to get a full understanding of all that surrounds the name. Delali is a name given to anyone and I mean anyone because it is not gender specific to say that it is given to only males or only females but it can be given to both males and females. To break the name down for a full insight, know that it has three syllables that each carry a distinct meaning.

  1. First- 'De' is a word in the Ewe language that means to rescue, save, marry etc. Despite the many meanings that it carries, the meaning this word carries in the context of this particular name under consideration here is to rescue or save. To throw more light on this word, it is a verb and as earlier stated, it means to save from a situation or circumstance into a new one or dispensation.
  2. Second- 'la' This second syllable or word expresses a state and it is not normally used alone or in isolation so to make it more meaningful let us see it in this word "DELA". Dela is a name in Ewe that means savior. In this state, it expresses a more defined meaning and the name Dela is also given to both males and females. If you can recall, there are many famous people that have the name Dela and so from here, I believe you now understand what Dela means.
When Dela is mentioned as stated earlier which I said means savior, who are we referring to?
God Almighty is the greatest of all and the Ewes also like anyone else agree to this fact and so giving this name to a child, all the parents are saying is that God is our Savior. In a sense, it can also be considered a form of honor unto God or a way of hailing his name as the Savior of the entire world.

3.Third- 'li' The word means the existence of something. It also makes more meaningful attribution when used in addition to another word hence let us consider the whole name and see what it means.
DELALI actually means the savior exists. I stated earlier that the savior mentioned here is God even though in some instances the belief of the people might determine what is being referred to as the savior.

Why Delali?

In most of my publications that talk about names, I made it clear that every name has a purpose and a reason for which it is given and this reason is not one to play with at all. Giving this name to a child is a great way of telling the whole world including the child that God Almighty is the only one who saves, this proclaims the power of God that with our dependency rested in him, we are well-catered for and saved from every harm including salvation from our sinful nature.
There are many other popular Ewe names that end in 'li', so let us quickly look at them.

Fafali - The first two syllables in this name mean peace. The addition of the 'li' gives it the meaning that there is peace or to put it in another way peace exists. I think the most appropriate meaning of this name is that there is the existence of peace in a family or something.
Kekeli - Everything successful is best done in the presence of light because it brings clear vision. Therefore the name simply means light and it declares as the name of  a child is mentioned that he or she will be light. This is also given to both males and females and it is like an everyday declaration unto a child that he or she is a light this actually sees manifestation.
Eli - This means that he exists and it also speaks of the fact that God exists. There can be reasons for giving a child this particular name of which one can be that the prayer of the parents has been answered which might be the child being given birth to an it is like an appreciation to God that gives children (fruits of the womb).
Mawuli - The Ewes call God Mawu so taking the name Mawuli is just saying that God exists or there is God. The hardness of life can make people forget at times about the existence of God to save but mentioning this name reminds them and give hope even in an unpleasant situation.

A Tale About Name
Once in a secondary school were some students who studied Arts and did all kinds of miscreant acts. Their class was male-dominated even though the school was a mixed school. one guy had a nickname called Scorpion thinking that he was the guy of the moment with so much influence. He was being given fans one day as the colleagues jubilated when the school prefect came into their class to talk to them and advise them on their conduct because their misconduct was been too much unbearable. After a very deep truth revealing talk by the prefect, the guy who called himself Scorpion now changed his name after some days. He chose a new name which is Hero and many of his colleagues wondered what might have come over this guy but he didn't take the mockery of his colleagues to heart. There was some truth that this guy understood before changing his name and that should be without doubt that names carry power and influence.
