The coconut tree has the scientific name, cocos Nucifera. This tree is found in almost all regions in Ghana and most especially in Volta Region and in areas like Agbozume,  and many other villages in the region just to mention but a few.  The sale of coconut either fresh or dry has been the work of some people as it is very lucrative. Some of them are transported from the villages where they are abundant to cities where it is a bit scarce. The products of this tree are numerous of which I will be elaborating on some.

  • Its unripe fruit which is unripe coconut is peeled and drank.
  • The unripe coconut is taken as medicine for fever and for the nourishment of the body.
  • The dried coconut is used in so many ways. The nut is used for oil production and useful for cooking, soap making, etc.
  • The chaff extracted after milling the nut is used for some candies and even can be given as food for pigs.
  • The husk is never left out. A great source of fuel for the village women because when fully dry, it combusts heavily.
  • Water from the milled dry coconut is used for toffee production.
  • Coconut tree branches are also used to make fences and shade.

The dried coconut husk is used as fuel for cooking in the swish oven.

It is widely used in the country because of its ability to catch fire desirably and also because of its low cost as compared to other sources of fuel. The ash of the husk is a base which makes it a valuable raw material in the soap industry.

There is also one important use of the branches or leaves of the tree. i.e it is beautifully woven and used to make fences and shade. This kind of fencing is very common in the village since its affordability is very moderate and durability is also good.

The use of the branches for serving such a purpose is very significant to the use of this tree.
The chaff obtained after milling the dried coconut is also dried and used to feed domestic birds and at the same time used again as fuel. The importance of this tree remains extensive and for that matter, everyone must make sure that careful attention is paid to it so that it will continue to give us more food and other things we can think of as important.

A major health condition coconut can be useful for is its ability to restore health in times of fever. The fresh coconut can just be peeled and drunk occasionally for absolute good health. A tree with very endless significance and it is very cheap to plant in houses since it also provides shade.

More about COCONUT...
Cutting down of trees for firewood is a well-known habit that contributes to deforestation and in the long run climate change. A number of entrepreneurs working to improve the adoption of clean cooking alternatives have come up with ways to turn coconut husk into charcoal that is carbon free.

At Adum in Kumasi is a man who sells coconut to many who love it. This is the business he also does as an entrepreneur and I tell you he gets to feed from this.

Coconut is easy to plant even though it takes about five years to mature and start fruiting but it is also a smart Agricultural investment to make.
