This is the right place where you will get to know why this food called fufu is what it is and I believe you will try it out to have a taste for yourself. I have never eaten this food before since I was staying in the Volta Region where our favorite food is akple or banku. I was fortunate to have my aunt visiting a town in Accra where she got to know about this food very well and even learned how to prepare it but this was when she was in her youth. As we were growing up, we cherished cooking, and especially, I always want to cook because we were being taught Home Economics in basic school where we get to know how to prepare pastries and all kinds of delicacies. A day came when we got some nice cassava, plantain, and cute ingredients for light soup and everything was just absolutely set for a fufu deal.
A mortar and pestle ready set and then cassava and plantain were peeled and set on fire. After they were properly cooked, the pestle was used to pound the fufu as the boiled cassava was gradually put inside the mortar. To cut it short it was awesome and we had great taste that day.
But why is this food so special to talk about?
First of all that I want to say, fufu gives you a very delicious taste that you will love. This food can be eaten with light soup, groundnut soup, palm nut soup, and even a mixture of any of these soups with okro soup. It is just so appealing an experience having the privilege to eat fufu.
Unusual energy is another thing fufu will give you. You know cassava is an energy-giving food right. So, believe me when it is said about fufu that it provides unusual energy and one thing you will experience after eating it is that you will sweat heavily.
For you who may want to prepare this food for yourself, follow these steps and get ready to enjoy this amazing food being talked about here.
This one will be served with groundnut soup so we will learn that one too.
Ingredients: cassava, plantain, groundnut paste, salt, spices, pepper, tomato paste, chicken or any meat or fish(fish can be smoked), etc.
- Cut and peel cassava and plantain, then boil in a clean pot very well.
- Get ready with a well-washed mortar and pestle for pounding or make use of a fufu-pounding machine.
- If using a mortar and pestle, put the boiled cassava and plantain off the fire and pound the plantain first. Now pound the cassava and as it gets nearer to smoothening finely, add some of the pounded plantains to make it very smooth and palatable as you pound to make it very fine. Get a bowl and put the well-pounded fufu inside nicely.
NB: Hot water must be put aside which will be added bit by bit as the fufu is being pounded and turned to make it soft and well cohesive.
Preparing the groundnut soup
- Pour in the groundnut paste into a saucepan and mix well with water. Tomato paste can be mixed with it as well. It should not be too watery.
- Put it on fire and stir as it simmers. Simmer until it begins to produce oil on top and still allow it to simmer very well.
- Add enough water, ground pepper and, spices and allow to boil very well.
- Add salt and any other seasoning. Boiled chicken or fried one can be added with the smoked fishes at hand.
- Allow for proper cooking and taste to check salt level and how tasty it is. Do any necessary additions and add sliced onions, cut okro and , garden egg. As it will be served with fufu it must not be too thick so that it can easily be swallowed.
Traveling to Kumasi in Ghana, I had the privilege to enjoy fufu on many occasions and the got clear that the people there love to eat fufu like something such that almost every week, a household near us will prepare fufu, and its so amazing.
